Functional Symptoms Patient Survey

The Royal College of Physicians is conducting a piece of work on understanding the specific needs of patients with ‘Functional Symptoms’ and the models of care needed to support them

These symptoms – such as chronic pain, fatigue, dizziness, and non-epileptic seizures – can have a profound impact on quality of life, yet many patients struggle to access effective and compassionate care.

The survey has been co-designed by a group of patients with lived experience, in collaboration with Dr Theresa Barnes, Clinical Lead for Outpatients, and the RCP’s Patient and Carer Network, to ensure it reflects the realities faced by this community. It is open to anyone living with functional symptoms, regardless of diagnosis, and takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.

The insights gathered will inform a forthcoming position statement from the Royal College of Physicians, aimed at driving improvements in clinical care, training, and service design for people with functional symptoms. The findings will also be used to support broader advocacy efforts to raise awareness and ensure that patients’ voices are central to shaping policy and practice.
